Interesting... is the idea that this bridges the gap between whether something should be an email or a phone call? It happens to me all the time where I decide halfway through drafting an email that it should be a phone call, so this could be a happy medium.
Awesome thought :) Originally we were just frustrated that there was no way to send voice messages like one would do in iMessage for email.
This is a good point! We've also been quite inspired by Loom (and even better than Loom, you don't need to open another app to listen to the voice note, it can be listened to straight from within Gmail)
Everything is stored client-side -> so the voice message is stored in your browser first and then it's attached to the email (so stored in your email).

Can you elaborate on where the audio is stored and when it's removed from your buckets?
