SEEKING WORK - Remote US - DevOps

DevOps is a culture, not a role. Invest in your team's knowledge of DevOps best practices and make a team of internal experts within your domain.

    In the past, I've:

    - Saved a company $500k a year in CI infrastructure costs.

    - Worked with several hundred engineer organizations to migrate from Jenkins to GitHub Actions.

    - Introduced configuration as code and GitOps best practices to teams.

    - Built dynamic review environments triggered on a pull request.

    I'm available to:

    - Reduce the costs of your CI infrastructure so that you can free up your infrastructure budget.

    - Help you migrate from Jenkins to a more modern CI platform, like GitHub Actions, to reduce operational overhead and iterate faster.

    - Help your team evaluate emerging technologies and processes. CircleCI or GitHub Actions? Kubernetes or Nomad? GitOps or ChatOps? How do you know what's likely going to be a fad and what's not? I can help your team avoid costly mistakes when adopting new tools and processes.

    - Scale your DevOps processes. Should your company adopt full-stack teams that own the entire delivery pipeline, or should a specialized team of internal experts own the pipelines? These are the questions I can help you answer so that you can decide on the right trade-offs that make sense for your company as it scales to avoid future expensive migrations.

    - Do implementation work. Maybe you're a small team that doesn't have enough DevOps resources. I can augment your team, dive in, and start delivering fast. I'm well-versed in terraform, Kubernetes, docker, etc. I can help you build repeatable pipelines, documentation and provide a smooth hand-off to your internal team.

    - Need something else? Please don't hesitate to reach out.

SEEKING WORK | Europe | Remote Only | Server security

I offer practical and affordable cybersecurity services, namely - intrusion detection and prevention system, which will protect your Linux based server from security threats, by inspecting and blocking malicious traffic coming from the internet.

    This is how it works:

Install, configure and remotely maintain open source Suricata or Snort IDS software and apply needed traffic inspection rules, which suites your server environment the best. Then all the outgoing/incoming traffic on your server is decrypted and inspected with so called IDS signatures/rules of common attacks and other malicious activity patterns, and if it matches any - request gets blocked, before it ever reached your webserver process.

With this solution it doesn't even matter what kind of backend solution is running on the server, traffic is inspected and blocked if needed, before it reaches the end process – apache, nginx, tomcat or whatever it might be. This also means traffic doesn't have to be redirected via 3rd party like cloudflare. This way we can thwart common internet malicious activity - vulnerability exploits, scanners, botnets, login bruteforcing, SQL injections. So you can basically host a 10 years old WordPress installation and all exploit attempts will be blocked.

I can also write custom IDS rules for your specific application, to block malicious activity/attacks against it. Tell my what kind of issues your server/product is dealing with and we can discuss if this IDS solution can possibly help the cause. We also use shared threat intel, so if a new botnet is out there and already attacking servers - your server will know to block those IP addresses.

All the work is already automated, onboarding new server for full protection takes about 5 minutes. Then actual work is applying needed rules for particular environment and weeding out any false positive signature matches.

Looking to implement your own design system, component library with React and Typescript?

It won't be that easy when you start from scratch.

I've spent the last couple of months with research and development to understand the concept, explore its boundaries, map the ecosystem and come up with a mini-book (technical guide) and a working example.

Previously, I've created my first design system (a living styleguide) in 2015. Since then, I help companies to understand the concept and to roll their own.

SEEKING WORK - REMOTE I help non-technical founders build and launch Million Dollar MVPs.

Are you a non-technical founder struggling to find technical partners to help make your startup vision a reality?

I’ve spent the last ten years obsessing about how to help founders like you get their startups off the ground and into the marketplace.

Since leaving Google in 2015 and starting No Nerds No Problem, I’ve grown this company to 10+ nerds across 4 different countries, been featured in Bloomberg, and have helped more than 25 companies launch their MVPs and raise a combined $650M in fundraising.

And I can help you do the same.

Here's what my clients have to say:

“Before we started No Nerds' process, I wasn’t sure it would be worth it. Having gone through it, I can’t imagine it going any other way." - Sachin Gulaya (CEO, Alpine Vapors)

“James and his team stepped in at a critical moment in Wellness 4 Humanity's trajectory and delivered exactly what we needed to hit our deadlines." - Lian Pham (Founder, Wellness 4 Humanity)

“After three years of other agencies promising a lot but delivering little, getting to test a prototype after just a few weeks was very cool. From the first time we sat down, I really felt James got what I was trying to do.” - Andy Lin (Founder, Self Portrait Project)

We’re Dials: Github for property maintenance. Today, huge skyscrapers and hospitals track maintenance items (furnace repair) using legacy “building management systems”. It’s what you’d expect: desktop software, six-figure contracts and multi-year implementation timelines. For the other 99% of buildings, Dials moves all this to the cloud and organizes it, letting everyone work faster, earn more, and take better care of their buildings. The first piece we’re doing is HOA reserve planning, a high-stakes problem that when done incorrectly, causes disasters like the condo collapse that just happened in Florida.

We’re making product design our first hire because we see ourselves as similar to Square: lots of semi-technical users, served by an inexpensive, self-serve product. Product Design will be a key growth driver for the business and accordingly, this position offers a ton of visibility, and room for growth.

You will have broad discretion to remodel, use, or even discard what we’ve built so far. We wouldn’t mind if you want to contribute code but the priority is someone who can work from (and help shape) product requirements, building flows and assets using Figma, InDesign, Photoshop, and other similar tools.

Our founders have 15+ years combined experience in Silicon Valley, one prior exit, and our CTO led the perception team at the company that was first to legally operate an 18-wheel semi truck with nobody in the cab. We’ve assembled a great team of 30+ investors from Stripe, Square, Coinbase, and Heroku, and are a distributed-by-choice company with the founders in different cities. Obviously, we want to make ourselves and our investors money, but we chose this because it’s technically deep, and has the potential to make millions of owners', managers', accountants', and tradespeoples' work lives more pleasant. Aishanou and I creating the sort of place we’d want to work ourselves: clear expectations and reporting lines, respectful, high-caliber coworkers, 45-50 hours/week of work (no weekend work/”crunch time”), and ample mentorship for junior employees.

I’m a programmer with >10 years experience, primarily working remotely on a freelance or contract basis. My recent experience is around probabilistic programming language research, but I’d be happy to work in any technically interesting domain. I’ve done mostly Python, Javascript and a some Haskell recently, but I’m willing to switch languages as necessary. I have a growing personal interest in FPGA/RISC-V/embedded so would also be interested in opportunities to gain experience with those.

I am looking for part-time work, preferably 20 hours a week or less. If you are looking to get a small project done, or you have an existing project where some maintenance work needs to be done (perhaps on a regular basis), then I would love to hear from you.

I am a very experienced Python developer, having used the language in all kinds of areas and situations, including web development (Django, Flask, Pylons, Google App Engine, etc), desktop GUI development, database access (MS SQL Server, MySQL, and Postgres), ORMs, REST APIs, scripting, backend development, automated testing, web crawling/scraping, data extraction and parsing/ETL, parsing, language implementation, games, etc.

I have a lot of experience with relational databases and SQL as well, especially MS SQL Server and Postgres. In fact, in all of my previous jobs I have used SQL, including designed database schemas, writing queries, measuring performance and optimizing queries, writing views and stored procedures, etc.

A lot of the Who is hiring / who wants to be hired posts are copy pasted as they are the same, or very similar every month. What's wrong with that?
        • thih9 994 days ago
Nothing wrong with a freelancer posting the same comment every couple of months, when they’re looking for clients. That’s what these threads are for.

But using more than one account, posting in more than one thread, and doing that every single month, seems spammy. Especially when it’s coming from an agency and not an individual.

I asked a while ago [1] but didn't get any reply:

      > What's the point of writing a comment as a company in a thread for freelancers? Also: is this a duplicate post? A team leader from that same company posted another comment [2] not long ago.

Additionally, your comment history and the comment history of the related account [3] consist of monthly whoishiring / freelancer posts for the past year. Is this an automated account?

        • thih9 993 days ago
I'd guess it's against the rules, the thread is for freelancers and not agencies.

If more agencies started posting here (and write the same comment every month), then 1. freelancers would be at a disadvantage, and 2. it would get spammy, we could basically replace the monthly thread with a static page.

I'm an expert in cloud native development (DevOps, Kubernetes and AWS).

My main focus is helping companies get the most out of the cloud. What that means depends on the company. It means architecting start ups cloud setup while paying special attention to security and best practises. It also means helping enterprise customers reduce their AWS bills. Other things I've done include, automate infrastructure with tools like CDK and terraform. Building platforms to allow developers and project managers to deploy code without getting the DevOps teams involved. Migrating from GCP to AWS, and much more.

I have lot's of varied experience, in different sectors and roles including: cloud development, front and backend development. As well as expertise with many different languages and frameworks including: Rust, Elixir, Typescript, Elm, ReScript, React/React Native, Phoenix.

    Things I've done recently:

      - Built a custom PaaS solution on top of Kubernetes for an enterprise client (AWS, Elixir, K8s)
      - A Heroku like PaaS solution for end users, complete with CI/CD, auto scaling, automated deployments etc (Rust, K8s, AWS)

SEEKING FREELANCER: for a no-doubt underpaid (but guilt-free and potentially highly satisfying) automation job :)

    - Who: Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef (non-profit) | Cairns, Australia (it's REMOTE) | citizensgbr.org

    - What: we currently need help with: AUTOMATION(!)

We're a 21st century conservation organisation for the Great Barrier Reef. Or at least that's the idea. We're involved in a broad range of activities[1], but the big picture is a global conversation about climate change.

Our current go-to is a citizen science / research effort called the Great Reef Census[2], currently in its second year. The project incorporates a whole range of (relatively lo-fi / glue-together yet novel) tech solutions, from remote / vessel-deployed offline servers, spatially aware data submission portals, 3d planning tools[3] (we like mapping), plus an ML/CV angle being developed from last year's data[4]. It's an open project, so all data is being released under CC, similarly code open sourced (as soon as time permits). Everything we can build in house we do. We need a few extra pairs of hands for delivery of the project this year.

Last year we successfully trialed the use of edge servers for collecting data, offline, from remote areas of the reef. These were developed at speed with hardware donated by Dell. Config is currently completely manual and stack is a mix of ubuntu / netplan (captive wifi w public dns + 4g) / haproxy / offline mirrors of our web properties / mapping tile server. It is in dire need of some devops love and automation.

We're looking for help in other areas too: on the web we are primarily vue / node (db is firestore, cloud is gcp / cloudflare). At the same time we do a lot of data-wrangling. We also need to prepare the project for open sourcing, to drive further tech engagement and resource. If your skills lend themselves to any of this, it would free up hands.

We are busy and under resourced and find it difficult to recruit / compete in the current landscape. That said, the work can be rewarding plus we're willing to accommodate any measures that would make it work for the right person. Tech is currently a one-person show, but we're trying to fix that. The role would likely suit a senior type with some days spare and a passion for the environment. It is a paid position. If you're in Australia, we also do a lot of diving and there's the opportunity to certify & spend some solid time on the reef as part of the project.

Role: Hyper casual over 3-6mths+ (what can you do, how long will it take) / flexible schedule to suit budget (we value skill set over availability) / no juniors, interns at this stage unfortunately.

Questions / expressions of interest to hq@citizensgbr.org ~ Thanks!

I don't mean to cause any offence, but you have a little bit of shit in your Github and HN username.

You may already know, but just in case, it may impact how you're perceived w.r.t. prospective employers.

Moderators: I would appreciate if you would remove this unhelpful comment.

@kowlo, thanks for your opinion on the screen name I've used since the late 90s, but imagine if unleash and it are two words and have nothing to do with what you're implying.

    SEEKING WORK (REMOTE)

    Location: Toronto, Canada

I've built large scale financial systems, rich mobile applications, robust, fault-tolerant back-end systems, and just about everything in between. But I treat every engagement as a learning experience with the assumption that I need to question my assumptions at every step and learn from others.
