The massive disinformation campaigns remind me of Neal Stephenson's idea of an "artificial inanity" crisis on the fictional internet ("reticulum") in his book Anathem.

In the past a major problem of information management was that it was just plain hard to get information. Now it is easy to get information, but it is hard to tell what is genuine and what is misinformation (inadvertently wrong) or disinformation (maliciously wrong).

How much worse will it get when near-Turing-complete troll bots crank out disinformation on the commands of various powers with varying interests?
