I have designed stuff like it's proposed in P1451-9 (xmpp backbone for all kinds of iot protocols) like around 2005 and even coauthored a patent how to connect sensor networks to the internet for a Japanese Telco (I also have no clue why anyone awards such patents). Having devoted more than 5 years of my life to this topic, I would say there is absolutely no need for such standards other than to keep the people involved in them busy.
