The BBC is one of the few public-type institutions where it enjoys a certain level of independence from the government, since it's mostly funded by the viewers [1]. No matter what you think about the content they produce or the License Fee, this model is vastly different compared to most if not all public broadcasters where the government funds the operation and thus has powers to turn them into propaganda machines. Hungary is a case in point [2].

This government has successfully sabotaged this delicate independence.

    > As part of this, £200m will contribute to the £285m annual funding gap by 2027/28, created by the licence fee settlement earlier this year.

When this government calls it a settlement, what it really means is "you have to settle for this pittance because that's all you're getting."

Same for the Local Government Settlements.

Truly a shame, the BBC is a national treasure. The government should absorb the cost

The government are actively sabotaging it for the same reason as they're privatizing Channel 4.

The government deliberately made the gap. They're not going to cover it it.
