Plug for my work: if you're interested in BFT consensus protocols, look at "Simplex Consensus." It's faster than the state-of-the-art, with a really easy security proof, maybe the easiest yet. Easier than PBFT, Raft, Paxos (even though the latter two are for crash faults only). Let me know if you add it to a class syllabus or deploy it in the real world.
